A GUIDE ON SHINSENGUMI – THE BACKGROUND AND MANAGEMENT
The Shinsengumi (1863 – 1869) was one of the shogunate’s army and was active in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period. Led by Kondō Isami and Hijikata Toshizō, the Shinsengumi, formerly known as Roshigumi, was organized by the shogunate for the guarding of the 14th Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi, founded by the lord of Aizu-han Matsudaira Katamori. They gained considerable fame in the Ikedaya Jiken and the August 18 coup events etc.
The Shinsengumi, tiding over the late Tokugawa period’s turbulent state, remained loyal and bravely fought against the revolution initiated by new government forces. Most members fought to their ends during the battles. It was however their way of life to sacrifice oneself in loyalty to the shogunate and belief in Bushido attracted many people worldwide and remained one of Japanese history’s favourable and prominent figures.
A Guide on Shinsengumi: the background and management brings you detailed background of the troop’s setup and operation, along with invaluable images that speaks louder than words in historical context. The book is an English work of the selected chapters of the Chinese book 《幕末英傑 – 新選組》(倫世豪 著) by the same author Stephane Lun, who has gained kind support from Ms Megumi Hijikata, director of the Hijikata Toshizō Museum as well as descendant of Hijikata Toshizō’s elder brother. The publications are the fruit of persistent effort in the hope of outreaching the Shinsengumi’s story to a wider pool of population and communities worldwide.
The book is easy to read and well organized with topics of interest, supplemented with pictures of artefacts and on-site historical remains. It is well researched and informative on the management basis of the Shinsengumi. A not-to-miss introduction for Shinsengumi fans and advocate!
